A great and old (not in age) friend of mine met in the deep dark Auckland night with a bottle of wine and a swagger for the world.

Born in 1837 in a three-walled log cabin in the woods of East Kentucky. Skilled in bear-wrestling and beer-quaffing, he achieved a vocabulary of 752 curses and 16 niceties. Little is known of his life between the frontier period and his disappearance from public sight in mysterious circumstances in 1863, supposedly due to a gunshot wound inflicted by a Miss Myrtle Prunes, who was recorded as muttering ancient Gallic hexes against his name.

His name surfaced again in a New Zealand sub-cultural context in the 1960s, during which time scattered anecdotes of a "wild, hairy, feral-smelling individual" were lodged against his identity.

Occasional sightings continue to be brought forward in the Canterbury environs, generally appended with adjectives of the "obstreperous", "difficult" and "arsehole-ish" genus, in league with such nouns as "bastard" and "oregano importer" (we just report this stuff; we don't claim to validate or understand it).

The Sacred Art of Building: mind-bending truth about good architecture and the relevance of spirituality in design, soul-earthing stuff.

One of our most basic human needs is to feel of value to others, to have a sense of self-worth, human dignity and meaning to our lives. Yet how do we honor and respect the dignity and self-worth of others when we build or furnish our buildings? Do we give the carpenters, masons, and furniture makers any latitude to do their best rather than their least, or any encouragement to put their hearts instead of just their time into their work?

One of the great rules of design is do something basic right. Then everything gets much more right of itself. But if you do something basic wrong - if you make what I call a Type 1 Error - you can get nothing else right.
